“Mind-blowingly Dynamic”

Hypnotica Provides the Palette for One-of-a-Kind Installation

While working on a residential lighting project, Robert Drummond was inspired
to employ an existing 40-by-8-foot reflecting pool as a canvas for a work of
art on the property of a New Mexico ranch residence.

An interactive video and LED installation artist, Drummond envisioned edging
the pool with dynamic light to create excitement and energy. He began
exploring different products in search of one that would do what his
imagination conceived, while being durable enough to withstand extreme
climate conditions — including fluctuating temperatures and water levels.
But everything Drummond tested was disappointing.

“They all lacked programmability and were not very exciting,” he
says.

Then Drummond heard about iLight’s Hypnotica iS Color Changing Series
Fixtures. He ordered a 6-foot sample, clamped it to the side of the pool, and
gave Hypnotica’s spectrum of color possibilities and programability a test
drive.

“I fired it up and stood there with the homeowner, stunned,” he
says. “I was amazed by the level of brightness. It was laser-light
bright. I asked my client if she wanted to work with it and she said: ‘Are
you kidding me? We’re absolutely going to do that!’”

The Design Challenge

From that point, art gave way to an array of practical considerations.

The edge lighting component of the light installation would require a
retrofit — made challenging by a brick patio surrounding the pool. Also,
there were no provisions for wiring, and a solution would be needed to
protect the fixtures from above and below, keeping them out of view and out
of the water. Finally, there had to be a way to remove the fixtures in
sections for maintenance.

Determined to overcome each obstacle, Drummond brainstormed solutions while
also reaching out to iLight Technologies for ideas.

As Drummond turned the homeowner’s Moroccan courtyard into a construction
site, iLight worked to ensure installation of Hypnotica would be hassle-free.

“They were very thorough, had a lot of great feedback and asked a lot of
questions,” Drummond says. “Everything they did was spot on. I got
all the right stuff, perfect lengths. They were awesome.”

After cutting back brick, creating custom aluminum edging to hold the
fixtures, modifying clips, doing all of the wiring, and installing three
exterior transformers, Drummond was able to return his attention to the task
of creating drama.

He and his client considered different color schemes and effects to evoke
different images and moods, and from there Drummond experimented with
Hypnotica’s sequential color changing, color fading, multicolor blending, and
color movement effects.

The Hypnotica Advantage

The result is a pool that at night becomes a reflective stage for eight
stunning theatrical light shows.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” Drummond says. “It’s really
exciting and spectacular. The Hypnotica is mind-blowingly dynamic and punchy,
and the owner is ecstatic.”

After many experiences with poor-quality LED products, Drummond is thrilled
to have found a product that’s sublime. “It really helped to work with
this first-rate American company and create something that’s just not
possible with other LED systems,” he says.

Plexineon Illuminates Historic Pier Along Canadian Waterfront

Located near the U.S. and Canadian border, 45 miles from Vancouver, the enchanting community of White Rock, British Columbia, takes great pride in its picturesque beach promenade, which includes a historic 1,500-foot pier.

When aging lights along the pier recently needed replacing, there was an opportunity not only to install better illumination, but also enhance the waterfront charm. As a result, 15 new overhead arches were added, each edged with iLight Plexinon White 1X fixtures. The result is a civic treasure that’s now an even greater focal point for this “City by the Sea.”

The Design Challenge

The lighting design was developed by Tripped On Light Design Inc., which was brought on board by engineering firm MCW Consultants Ltd.

The project called for a durable lighting solution that could withstand exposure to the elements and salt spray. Intensity was also critical, as the client wanted the design element to be visible even from high upon the slope on which the city is perched.

From an aesthetic standpoint, there was also a desire to evoke the area’s past — a theme that extended to the landscape design developed by Sharpe & Diamond Landscape Architecture Inc.

To meet all those requirements and more, Joseph M. Scott, President of Tripped On Light Design, chose Plexineon.

“I’ve been familiar with Plexineon for years,” he says. “It’s tried and true.”

The Plexineon Advantage

Scott says, “I knew the warm glow would mimic incandescent light, which would be consistent with the heritage layer that was key to the design. Also, the fact the light emanates out over 270 degrees meant it would be visible even from a hill, despite being under an arch.”

Another advantage was that Plexineon could be factory-bent into the shape of the arches. “When we got the fixtures, they just snapped in. The installation was flawless and quick,” says Scott.

Since viewing the lights from many perspectives, Scott says both he and the city are thrilled.

“They’re absolutely delighted, and it even went beyond my expectations,” he says. “The quality and uniformity make it a very pleasant line of light that is visible from all points.”

Plexineon Redefines an Existing Structure.\r\n\r\n\r\nOnce a humble workshed, the new administrative center for the Claremont University Consortium (CUC) in Claremont, California, is a stunning study in how creative light installations can give an existing structure a second life.\r\n\r\nCentral to the building’s rebirth is a vertical linear pattern of iLight Plexineon White 1X Series fixtures that highlight the exterior — redefining the structure’s public presence and acting as a precursor to new dynamic and user-friendly interior.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThe Design Challenge\r\n\r\nThe goal of the project was to consolidate into one location several departments and services that previously were dispersed across campus. Opting to repurpose a gabled-roof workshop and storage shed went a long way toward achieving sustainability goals, but the CUC sought to go a step further — requiring that elements in the adaptive design also be environmentally sensitive, including lighting.\r\nToward that end, Nelson Jenkins, Owner of Lumen Architecture, used varying lengths of White Plexineon to efficiently and effectively accentuate the vertical lines of a new slatted cedar screen that envelopes the existing façade.\r\n\r\nLTL Architects, project architect, designed the screen to make the building appear less utilitarian and more inviting.\r\n\r\nThat intent is especially apparent as the screen transitions from wall to entry canopy, where the slats are threaded with Plexineon in increased density to playfully highlight the structure’s sloped geometry while providing general illumination and way finding.\r\n\r\nThe Plexineon Advantage\r\n\r\nJenkins chose Plexineon in this case for several reasons. “The fixtures are weather resistant, durable, and they provide just the right brightness,” he says.\r\n\r\nDue to past experience with the product, Plexineon’s reliability won over both him and now CUC.\r\n\r\n”The client really loves the effect of the Plexineon,” he says. “The project has been considered a great success.”\r\n\r\n

Cole Lighting Custom at the Art Institute of Chicago

The J1907-AIC-A is a custom-built, 3000ºK LED pedestrian bridge luminaire. Aluminum and acrylic extrusions were developed to produce continuous illumination with minimal glare to the eye. The assembly was specifically designed to work within a wood cap-rail which, along with associated structural elements, was provided by the G.C. The following photos reveal the beautifully even distribution of light across the walkway, as well as the uninterrupted illumination running the length of the bridge. A detailed drawing is attached for your reference.

The existing facility was reconfigured to create a cafe on the lower level. These large pendant fixtures – the “umbrella Fixtures” – provide a feature accent while at the same time providing soft ambient light. The fabric was installed in the field on the 8ft diameter metal frames. Simply lit with T8 lamps for energy saving and long lamplife. To meet the fire code, sprinkler heads terminate at the center of each fixture.
