Founded in 1967, Humber College has been recognized across Canada as a leading postsecondary institution. With more than 32,000 full-time students and 180 programs, the college receives a lot of academic traffic. Humber has also been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for four consecutive years (2016-2019). Sustainability has been one of Humber’s five core institutional values.

After embracing a comprehensive sustainability strategy and in turn developing an Integrated Energy Master Plan (IEMP) to strategically address the institution’s energy and water consumption, Salex was asked to take part in a lighting retrofit project with the goal of reducing the lighting energy consumption by as much as 70% in the buildings in scope.

The focus of Humber’s recent energy-efficiency initiative was to upgrade the lighting systems in 20 buildings that have classrooms, labs, lecture halls, offices, indoor athletic facilities, corridors and other common use areas, to enhance the college’s study atmosphere. With an upgrade from traditional fluorescent lighting to the latest in demand LED technology using new and retrofit fixtures, Salex recommended Visioneering, Lumenwerx, Elite, Universal Lighting Technologies, Liteline, Amerlux, products and collaborated with OSRAM with the goal of enhancing Humber’s lighting, while increasing its sustainability.

The ENCELIUM EXTEND Networked Light Management System (LMS) by OSRAM was used to provide a centrally managed LMS with robust features and functionality, including wireless capabilities. It helped reduce lighting energy consumption and provided the flexibility to adjust light levels for a wide range of tasks and personal preferences. All of the products used in this project were chosen for their DLC qualification, higher efficiency, and unique features that ensured all the project requirements were met.
